What makes Midwives different?

PERSONALIZED CARE

Midwives are known for their personalized, patient-centered approach, which involves longer appointment times and a focus on building strong relationships and trust. This allows for comprehensive discussions about your health, preferences, and concerns, ensuring that your care is tailored to your unique needs and values.

HOLISTIC APPROACH

Emphasizing a holistic, low-intervention philosophy, midwives support the body's natural processes and offer a variety of options for labor and delivery. This approach prioritizes your comfort and autonomy, promoting a more empowering and supportive birth experience that aligns with your personal preferences.

COLLABORATIVE CARE

If necessary, Midwives collaborate closely with obstetricians and other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive care. While they expertly manage low-risk pregnancies and births, they also have access to a network of specialists for consultation if complications arise, blending personalized midwifery care with additional medical expertise when needed.

Midwifery is for you if…

You Value Personalized Attention

If you appreciate longer, more in-depth consultations where your concerns and preferences are thoroughly discussed, midwifery care might be perfect for you. Midwives take the time to get to know you and provide care that is tailored specifically to your needs, ensuring a supportive and individualized experience.

You Seek a Holistic Birth Experience

For those who wish to explore natural and low-intervention options during pregnancy and childbirth, midwifery offers a holistic approach that respects and supports your body’s natural processes. Midwives are dedicated to providing a variety of choices that align with your birth plan and personal comfort.

You Want Collaborative Support

If you value a collaborative approach to care that combines the expertise of midwives with the support of a broader healthcare team, midwifery provides a balanced model. Midwives work in partnership with obstetricians and specialists to offer comprehensive care and ensure your safety and well-being throughout your journey.

Common misconceptions about Midwifery

Myth: Midwives Only Care for Pregnant Women

Midwives provide a range of services beyond pregnancy care, including well-woman exams, gynecological services, and menopause management. They are trained to support women’s health at all stages of life.

Myth: Midwifery Care is Less Safe Than OBGYN Care

Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM’s) are highly-trained professionals who specialize in low-risk pregnancies and natural births. Only if necessary do they collaborate, consult or refer to Obstetricians or Maternal Fetal Specialists.

Myth: Midwives Don’t Provide Pain Management

Midwives offer various pain management options, including epidurals, nitrous oxide, and hydrotherapy. They support your choices and work to ensure you are comfortable throughout labor and delivery. Midwives also provide hands-on comfort measures & positioning techniques as needed!

Myth: Midwifery is Only for Women Who Want Natural Births

While spontaneous vaginal delivery is preferred for most patients, Midwives also support patients who choose repeat cesareans, natural or medical inductions when indicated. Midwifery care is flexible and tailored to your preferences, with your informed consent always being top of mind.

Myth: Midwives Don’t Handle Emergencies

Midwives are trained to handle many emergency situations during labor and birth. They are well prepared to provide safe, effective care in various scenarios.

Myth: You Can Only Have a Home Birth with a Midwife

Midwives are available for hospital, birth center or home births. They provide comprehensive care in both settings, ensuring a supportive experience regardless of where you choose to give birth. DWW only supports in-hospital births.
